Akkineni Nageswara Rao (20 September 1923 – 22 January 2014), popularly known by his initials ANR, was an Indian film actor and producer who worked predominantly in Telugu cinema. Active for over seven decades, he is regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of South Indian cinema, recognised for his versatility across mythological, folklore, romantic, and social genres.

Background
Nageswara Rao was born into an agrarian family in Venkata Raghavapuram, a village near Gudivada in the Krishna district of present-day Andhra Pradesh. He was the youngest of five children. With limited formal schooling, he developed an early interest in stage performance, often playing female roles in local theatre productions, which was common practice at the time.
Career
Early years
His film debut came with Dharmapatni (1941), directed by P. Pullaiah. His first significant role was in Seeta Rama Jananam (1944), produced by Ghantasala Balaramayya, where he played the role of Rama. This was followed by mythological and folklore films that established him as a leading man in the 1940s.
Rise to stardom
The success of Balaraju (1948) propelled him to popular acclaim. Through the late 1940s and 1950s, he worked extensively with Vijaya Productions, Vauhini Studios and other major banners. Films such as Laila Majnu (1949), Devadasu (1953), Anarkali (1955), Tenali Ramakrishna (1956), Mayabazar (1957) and Bhakta Tukaram (1973) became landmarks of Telugu cinema. His portrayal of Devadasu, directed by Vedantam Raghavaiah, is widely cited as one of the defining performances in Indian film history.
Production and later work
In 1976, ANR shifted base from Madras (Chennai) to Hyderabad and established Annapurna Studios, named after his wife. The studio played a key role in the migration of the Telugu film industry to Hyderabad. He continued acting into the 2010s, with later notable roles in Seetharama Kalyanam, Premabhishekam, Sutradharulu (1989) and Manam (2014, released posthumously), in which he appeared alongside his son Nagarjuna and grandson Naga Chaitanya.

Significance
Along with N. T. Rama Rao, ANR dominated Telugu cinema through its classical era and was instrumental in shaping its star system. He was credited with bringing emotional realism to romantic and tragic roles at a time when mythological and stylised performances were the norm. His decision to relocate to Hyderabad helped consolidate the city as the hub of Telugu film production, a process that continued with the establishment of Ramoji Film City and other studios. The Akkineni family remains a prominent acting dynasty in Indian cinema.
Family
ANR married Annapurna in 1949. Their son Akkineni Nagarjuna is a leading Telugu actor and producer; grandsons Naga Chaitanya and Akhil Akkineni are also actors in Telugu cinema. His elder son Venkat managed Annapurna Studios.
