Background and Early Life

Alia Bhatt was born in Mumbai to filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and actress Soni Razdan. Her father is of Gujarati and Kashmiri Pandit descent, while her mother is of Kashmiri and German-Jewish origin. She has an elder sister, Shaheen Bhatt, and two half-siblings from her father's previous marriage, actress and filmmaker Pooja Bhatt and Rahul Bhatt. Alia studied at Jamnabai Narsee School in Mumbai.

She made her on-screen debut as a child artist in her father's production Sangharsh (1999), where she played the younger version of Preity Zinta's character.

Career

Debut and Early Films (2012–2015)

Bhatt made her adult debut in Karan Johar's Student of the Year (2012), produced by Dharma Productions. She followed it with the road film Highway (2014), directed by Imtiaz Ali, which earned her the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. Subsequent commercial successes included 2 States (2014), Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014) opposite Varun Dhawan, and Kapoor & Sons (2016).

Critical Acclaim (2016–2019)

She received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance as a Bihari migrant in Udta Punjab (2016), directed by Abhishek Chaubey. She earned another Best Actress Filmfare for Raazi (2018), directed by Meghna Gulzar, in which she portrayed an Indian spy married into a Pakistani military family during the 1971 war. Gully Boy (2019), directed by Zoya Akhtar, brought her a third Filmfare Best Actress award.

Recent Work (2020–present)

She starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), based on a chapter of S. Hussain Zaidi's Mafia Queens of Mumbai, for which she won the National Film Award for Best Actress (jointly with Kriti Sanon for Mimi) at the 69th National Film Awards. The same year she appeared in S. S. Rajamouli's RRR in a supporting role and in Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva, directed by Ayan Mukerji. She made her Hollywood debut in Heart of Stone (2023) on Netflix, opposite Gal Gadot, and starred in Karan Johar's Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023), winning her fourth Filmfare Best Actress award. She also produced and starred in Darlings (2022) under her banner Eternal Sunshine Productions.

Other Ventures

In 2020 Bhatt launched Ed-a-Mamma, a children's apparel brand focused on sustainable clothing; the brand was acquired by Reliance Retail in 2023 with Bhatt continuing as a long-term advisor. She has been associated with various endorsement campaigns and sustainability initiatives, and is a frequent attendee of international fashion events, including the Met Gala, where she debuted in 2023.

Personal Life

Bhatt married actor Ranbir Kapoor on 14 April 2022 in Mumbai. Their daughter, Raha Kapoor, was born on 6 November 2022. The marriage united two prominent Hindi film families—the Bhatts and the Kapoors of R. K. Films lineage.
