Karan Johar

Overview

Karan Johar is an Indian film director, producer, screenwriter, television personality and entrepreneur, primarily associated with Hindi cinema. He is the chief executive of Dharma Productions, a film production house founded by his father Yash Johar in 1979. Johar is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary Bollywood, known for popularising glossy family dramas centred on urban Indian and diasporic life, and for shaping the visual and emotional grammar of mainstream Hindi cinema since the late 1990s.

Background

Karan Johar was born in Mumbai into a Punjabi-Sindhi film family. His father, Yash Johar, founded Dharma Productions in 1979 and produced films such as Dostana (1980), Duniya (1984) and Agneepath (1990). Karan studied at Greenlawns High School in Breach Candy and later took a degree in commerce from H.R. College, while also pursuing French at the Alliance Française.

He entered the film industry as an assistant and costume designer on Aditya Chopra's Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), produced by Yash Raj Films, where he also played a small role. The experience drew him close to Shah Rukh Khan, who would become a frequent collaborator across his subsequent work.

Career

Direction

Johar made his directorial debut with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukerji. The film was a major commercial success and won the Filmfare Award for Best Film and Best Director. He followed it with the multi-generational family drama Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001), which featured an ensemble of Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor.

His later directorial works include Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), which dealt with marital infidelity among Indians in New York; the segment Ajeeb Daastaan Hai Yeh in Bombay Talkies (2013); Student of the Year (2012), which launched Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Sidharth Malhotra; Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016); the segment Lust Stories (2018) on Netflix; and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023).

Production

After his father's death in 2004, Johar took charge of Dharma Productions and expanded the company's slate considerably. Dharma's productions and co-productions under his leadership include Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Dostana (2008), My Name Is Khan (2010), Agneepath (2012), 2 States (2014), Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014), Kapoor & Sons (2016), Badrinath Ki Dulhania (2017), Raazi (2018), Dhadak (2018), Kesari (2019), Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl (2020), Shershaah (2021), Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022) and Yodha (2024).

In 2018 he established Dharmatic Entertainment, the company's digital content arm, producing web films and series for streaming platforms including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. In 2024, Reliance-backed Adar Poonawalla's Serene Productions acquired a majority stake in Dharma Productions, with Johar continuing in a creative leadership role.

Television and other work

Johar hosts the celebrity chat show Koffee with Karan, which premiered on Star World in 2004 and later moved to Disney+ Hotstar from its seventh season in 2022. The show, structured around candid conversations with film personalities, has become a cultural reference point in Indian popular media. He has also appeared as a judge on reality programmes including Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa and India's Got Talent, and hosted Bigg Boss OTT (2021).

He has occasionally acted in supporting roles, with appearances in films such as Bombay Velvet (2015) and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. In 2017 he published a memoir, An Unsuitable Boy, co-written with Poonam Saxena.

Personal life

Johar became a father to twins, Yash and Roohi, born through surrogacy in February 2017. The children are named after his parents. He has spoken publicly about his relationship with his mother, who continues to be associated with Dharma Productions.

Through Dharmatic Entertainment, he has also been an early entrant among traditional Hindi film producers in the streaming space. His chat show Koffee with Karan has had a notable role in shaping public discourse around Bollywood celebrities.
