The company was set up at the start of the 2000s, a period in which several leading Hindi film stars moved into independent production. Aamir Khan, by then established as a major actor since the late 1980s, formed the company together with his then wife Reena Dutta, who served as a producer on its first project. The studio was conceived as a vehicle for projects that the founder could closely shape from script to release, in collaboration with directors who were often first-time or relatively new filmmakers.
The company's debut production was Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and released in 2001. Set in the Victorian period, the film centres on villagers in Champaner challenged to a cricket match by British officers to escape a punitive land tax. Lagaan received critical acclaim, was a major commercial success, and was nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 74th Academy Awards, becoming one of the few Indian films to reach that stage. It also won several National Film Awards and Filmfare Awards.
Taare Zameen Par, released in 2007, was directed by Aamir Khan, his directorial debut, with Amole Gupte as creative director and writer. The film deals with a child with dyslexia and the role of a sensitive teacher in his life. It was widely praised for its treatment of learning disabilities and was India's official entry to the Academy Awards in the Best Foreign Language Film category for that year.
The studio backed Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, directed by Abbas Tyrewala, which marked the lead debut of Imran Khan, Aamir Khan's nephew. The romantic comedy was a commercial success and is regarded as a notable youth-oriented film of the late 2000s.
Peepli Live (2010), written and directed by Anusha Rizvi, is a satire on farmer suicides and media coverage of rural distress. It was India's official entry to the Academy Awards for that year. Dhobi Ghat (also known as Mumbai Diaries, 2011) was the directorial debut of Kiran Rao and screened at international festivals including Toronto. Delhi Belly (2011), directed by Abhinay Deo and primarily in English with Hindi, was an adult comedy that became a sleeper hit and is often cited for expanding the tonal range of mainstream Hindi cinema.
Talaash: The Answer Lies Within (2012), directed by Reema Kagti and co-produced with Excel Entertainment, was a supernatural mystery thriller. The studio later produced Dangal (2016), directed by Nitesh Tiwari, based on the wrestlers Mahavir Singh Phogat and his daughters Geeta and Babita Phogat. Dangal became one of the highest-grossing Indian films globally, performing exceptionally well in China and other East Asian markets.
Secret Superstar (2017), directed by Advait Chandan, told the story of a teenage girl in Vadodara aspiring to be a singer despite an oppressive home environment. It too achieved very large box-office returns in China.
Laal Singh Chaddha (2022), directed by Advait Chandan and co-produced with Viacom18 Studios, was an authorised Hindi adaptation of the American film Forrest Gump. The film was a long-gestating project for the studio.
In 2012, the company expanded into television with Satyamev Jayate, a talk show hosted by Aamir Khan that addressed social issues such as female foeticide, child sexual abuse, dowry, domestic violence, and healthcare. Broadcast on Star Plus and simulcast on Doordarshan with regional language versions, the show ran for three seasons until 2014 and is widely cited as a significant example of issue-based television in India.
Aamir Khan Productions is generally described as a low-volume, high-involvement studio. It typically releases one project at a time, with the founder closely overseeing script development, casting, and post-production. The company has been associated with:
