Background
Kiran Rao was born on 7 November 1973 in Bengaluru into a Telugu-speaking family with roots in Andhra Pradesh. She spent part of her early life in Kolkata and later moved to Mumbai for higher education, graduating from Sophia College for Women. Career
Early work
Rao began her career as an assistant director on Hindi film productions. She worked as an assistant director on Ashutosh Gowariker's Lagaan (2001), where she met actor and producer Aamir Khan. She subsequently worked on projects such as Saathiya (2002) and Swades (2004) in assistant and second-unit roles.
Dhobi Ghat (2011)
Rao made her directorial debut with Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries), an English- and Hindi-language independent film exploring the lives of four characters across class divides in Mumbai. The film premiered at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival and was theatrically released in January 2011. It was produced under Aamir Khan Productions and starred Aamir Khan, Prateik Babbar, Monica Dogra and Kriti Malhotra. The film received critical attention for its observational style and was screened at multiple international film festivals.
Production work
As a partner at Aamir Khan Productions, Rao has been associated with the production of films and television projects including the social-issues programme Satyamev Jayate (2012–2014), Dangal (2016) and Secret Superstar (2017). Laapataa Ladies (2024)
Rao returned to direction after thirteen years with Laapataa Ladies, a Hindi-language comedy-drama set in rural India dealing with the accidental swap of two newly married brides on a train. Produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Kindling Productions and Jio Studios, it premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival and released theatrically in March 2024. The film received widespread critical praise and was selected as India's official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 97th Academy Awards.

Rao is associated with the Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image (MAMI) and has served on its board, contributing to the organisation of the Mumbai International Film Festival. Kiran Rao married actor Aamir Khan on 28 December 2005. The couple have a son, Azad Rao Khan, born in December 2011 through surrogacy. In July 2021, Rao and Khan jointly announced their divorce, while stating that they would continue to co-parent and collaborate professionally.
