Plot
Ishaan Awasthi is a creative but academically struggling boy whose inability to read, write, or follow lessons leads to repeated punishment at school and frustration at home. After failing his exams, his father sends him to a boarding school, where he becomes withdrawn and depressed. A new temporary art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh, played by Aamir Khan, identifies Ishaan's symptoms as dyslexia. Drawing from his own experience of working with children with special needs, Nikumbh works with Ishaan individually, restoring his confidence and helping him discover his artistic talent.
Background and Production
The story and screenplay were written by Amole Gupte, who developed the concept over several years with his wife, editor Deepa Bhatia. Gupte was initially attached to direct the film, but Aamir Khan eventually took over as director while Gupte remained as creative director and writer. The film marked Aamir Khan's directorial debut.
Darsheel Safary, who played Ishaan, was cast in his first film role. Several scenes involving classroom dynamics and child behaviour were developed through workshops with children. The film's animated sequences, used to depict Ishaan's inner world, were created by Vaibhav Kumaresh and Prana Studios.
Music
The soundtrack was composed by the trio Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy with lyrics by Prasoon Joshi. Notable tracks include "Maa", sung by Shankar Mahadevan, "Taare Zameen Par", and "Bum Bum Bole". The album was released by T-Series and received wide acclaim, with the song "Maa" becoming particularly popular for its emotional portrayal of a child's bond with his mother.
Release and Reception
The film was released theatrically in India on 21 December 2007. It received widespread critical praise for its sensitive treatment of dyslexia, the performances of Darsheel Safary and Aamir Khan, and its production values. The film was a commercial success in India and was later distributed internationally by Walt Disney Studios, marking one of the first instances of a major Hollywood studio acquiring distribution rights for an Indian film outside India.
