West Delhi lies between the central districts of Delhi and the western boundary with Haryana. It is bordered by North West Delhi to the north, Central Delhi and New Delhi to the east, South West Delhi to the south, and parts of Haryana to the west. The terrain is largely flat, forming part of the Indo-Gangetic plain, with the Najafgarh drain passing through portions of the district.
Administrative divisions
For revenue and administrative purposes, the district is divided into subdivisions, each headed by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate. These typically include:
- Rajouri Garden
- Patel Nagar
- Punjabi Bagh
The subdivisions are further organised into tehsils and revenue villages. Municipal services in the district are provided by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), while law and order falls under the Delhi Police's West and Outer districts of policing jurisdiction.
Demographics
West Delhi is one of the more populous districts of the National Capital Territory. The population is largely urban, with significant communities of Punjabi-origin residents who settled in the area following the Partition of India in 1947, alongside migrants from across northern India. Hindi and Punjabi are widely spoken, with English used in commerce and administration.

The district contains several well-known commercial and residential neighbourhoods, including Rajouri Garden, Janakpuri, Tilak Nagar, Punjabi Bagh, Vikaspuri, Hari Nagar, Tagore Garden, and Subhash Nagar. Significance
As one of the most densely populated districts of Delhi, West Delhi plays a major role in the residential, commercial, and industrial life of the capital. Its development since the 1950s reflects the broader story of Delhi's post-Partition expansion, with planned colonies, refugee resettlements, and later metro-led urban growth.
