For revenue and administrative purposes, the district is divided into subdivisions and tehsils, each headed by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate. The subdivisions of North West Delhi include Saraswati Vihar, Model Town and Narela.
Policing in the district is handled by the Delhi Police through dedicated district police units, while municipal services largely fall under the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD).
Geography
North West Delhi shares boundaries with several other districts of the capital, including North Delhi, West Delhi and South West Delhi, and is bordered to the north and west by the state of Haryana. The district contains a mix of densely populated residential colonies, unauthorised and resettlement colonies, urban villages, and large stretches of semi-urban and rural land towards Narela and the Haryana border.
Demographics and urban character
The district has consistently ranked among the most populous districts in India in successive Census of India enumerations. Its population is highly urbanised, with significant linguistic and cultural diversity reflecting migration from across northern India. Urban localities such as Rohini, Pitampura, Model Town, Shalimar Bagh, Ashok Vihar and Keshav Puram lie within or adjacent to the district, while Narela in the north functions as a sub-city developed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA).
Transport
The district is well served by the Delhi Metro, with stations on the Red, Yellow, Pink and other lines connecting localities such as Rohini, Pitampura, Netaji Subhash Place and Model Town to the rest of the capital. Major arterial roads, including segments of the Outer Ring Road and National Highway connections towards Haryana and Punjab, traverse the district. Indian Railways operates suburban services through stations including Narela.
Education and institutions
North West Delhi is home to several prominent educational and public institutions, including campuses associated with the University of Delhi in the Model Town and adjoining belt, the Netaji Subhas University of Technology in nearby West Delhi, and various central and state government offices located in Rohini and around. The Rohini court complex is one of the major district court establishments of Delhi.
Significance
As a large and rapidly urbanising district, North West Delhi plays an important role in Delhi's housing, commerce and connectivity. Planned townships such as Rohini and Narela have been central to the DDA's strategy of decongesting older parts of the capital, while the district's proximity to Haryana makes it a key gateway for inter-state movement.
