Background

The institution was founded in 1956 as the University College of Engineering, Burla, to address the need for technical education in the western region of Odisha. For several decades it functioned as a constituent college of Sambalpur University, offering undergraduate and later postgraduate programmes in engineering. The campus is situated near the Hirakud reservoir, close to the township of Burla.

University status

In 2009, the Government of Odisha enacted legislation upgrading UCE Burla to a unitary, non-affiliating state public university, naming it the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology. The change brought autonomy in academic, administrative and financial matters, while the institution continued its focus on engineering, technology and applied sciences.

Academics

VSSUT offers undergraduate (B.Tech), postgraduate (M.Tech, MCA, MBA, M.Sc) and doctoral (Ph.D) programmes. Teaching and research are organised across departments covering the principal branches of engineering and applied sciences, including:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering
  • Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering
  • Computer Science and Engineering
  • Information Technology
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Metallurgical and Materials Engineering
  • Production Engineering
  • Architecture
  • Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
  • Humanities and Social Sciences
  • Management Studies

Admission to B.Tech programmes is primarily through the Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) and the central JEE (Main), while postgraduate admissions use GATE scores and other qualifying examinations as applicable.

Campus

The campus is located at Burla, on the banks of the Mahanadi near the Hirakud Dam. It houses academic blocks, departmental laboratories, a central library, residential halls for students, faculty and staff quarters, sports facilities and a health centre. Burla town is part of the larger Sambalpur–Burla–Hirakud urban agglomeration in western Odisha.

Significance

As one of the earliest engineering colleges established in Odisha, the institution has played a substantial role in producing engineering graduates for industry, public sector undertakings, academia and government services in the state and beyond. Its conversion into a state technical university in 2009 was part of a broader effort by the Odisha government to strengthen technical higher education alongside institutions such as the Biju Patnaik University of Technology and the Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar.
