Background
BPUT was established by the Government of Odisha to bring the state's growing number of professional and technical colleges under a single affiliating and regulating body. Before its creation, engineering and other technical colleges in Odisha were affiliated to the conventional general universities of the state. The new technical university was formed to standardise curricula, examinations and academic governance across these institutions.
The headquarters of the university is at Rourkela in the Sundargarh district of western Odisha, an industrial city better known for the Rourkela Steel Plant and the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela.
Academic Profile
The university is primarily an affiliating institution, with a large network of constituent and affiliated colleges spread across Odisha. The areas covered through its affiliated colleges include:
- Engineering and Technology
- Management studies (MBA)
- Computer Applications (MCA)
- Pharmacy
- Architecture
- Hotel Management and applied sciences
BPUT conducts common semester examinations for affiliated colleges, prescribes the syllabus, and confers degrees in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in these disciplines. It also supports doctoral research through recognised research centres at affiliated institutions.
Governance
As a state university, BPUT is governed under an Act of the Odisha Legislative Assembly. The Governor of Odisha serves as the Chancellor in the customary manner of state universities in India, while academic and administrative affairs are led by a Vice-Chancellor appointed by the state government. Statutory bodies such as the Academic Council, Board of Management and Finance Committee oversee policy and operations.
Significance
BPUT plays a central role in technical education in Odisha by providing a unified academic framework for a large body of professional colleges. By consolidating affiliations that were earlier distributed among the state's general universities, it has shaped the structure of engineering and management education in the state and contributed to the expansion of professional higher education across districts beyond the major urban centres.
