Background

VMOU was established by the Government of Rajasthan as a state-funded open university with the aim of widening access to higher education. The university is named after Bhagwan Mahaveer, the twenty-fourth Tirthankara of Jainism, with the prefix Vardhman referring to his given name. It functions as one of the principal institutions in Rajasthan offering distance education at the undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma and certificate levels.

The university operates from its headquarters in Kota, a city already known as a major centre of education in Rajasthan. Its academic activities are organised through schools of study covering disciplines such as humanities and social sciences, commerce and management, education, science and technology, computer and information sciences, and continuing education.

Academic structure and delivery

As an open university, VMOU delivers programmes through a combination of self-instructional study material, regional and study centres, counselling sessions, and term-end examinations. Admissions are generally conducted on a rolling or annual basis, and several programmes are open to learners without the standard prerequisites required by conventional universities, in line with the open learning policy.

The university maintains a network of regional centres and study centres spread across Rajasthan, which serve as the local interface for student support, contact classes and examinations. Learners enrol in programmes ranging from school-equivalent preparatory courses to bachelor's, master's and research-level studies in selected disciplines.

Significance

VMOU plays an important role in extending higher education to working professionals, women, rural learners, and other groups for whom full-time campus study is not feasible. Together with institutions such as the Indira Gandhi National Open University, it forms part of India's broader open and distance learning system, contributing to the gross enrolment ratio in higher education in Rajasthan.
