Background
The University of North Bengal was created to provide a regional centre of higher learning in the sub-Himalayan part of West Bengal, an area which had previously depended on institutions affiliated to the University of Calcutta. By centralising teaching, research and examinations for colleges in the northern districts, the university has played a role in expanding access to undergraduate and postgraduate education in the region.
Campus and location
The main campus is situated at Raja Rammohunpur, on the outskirts of Siliguri in the Darjeeling district. The location places the university in proximity to the foothills of the eastern Himalayas, with road and rail connections through Siliguri, one of the principal urban centres of north Bengal.
Academics
The university offers programmes across faculties commonly associated with a comprehensive Indian state university, including arts and humanities, science, commerce, law, and management. It conducts undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes through its on-campus departments, and it affiliates colleges that conduct undergraduate teaching under its curricula and examinations.
Affiliated colleges
Numerous colleges across the northern districts of West Bengal — including parts of Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur, Malda and Alipurduar — have historically been affiliated with the University of North Bengal, although the affiliation map has shifted over time as new universities have been established in the region.
Significance
As one of the older state universities in West Bengal and the principal university serving north Bengal, NBU has been an important institution for academic mobility within the region. It has contributed to research in areas relevant to the local geography and society, including studies linked to the Himalayan environment, tea-growing economies, and the cultures of the diverse communities of north Bengal.
