Overview
The University of Kashmir is a state public university located in Srinagar, in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Established in the mid-twentieth century, it is one of the principal centres of higher education and research in the Kashmir Valley, offering programmes across the humanities, sciences, social sciences, law, education, business, and applied disciplines. Its main campus, popularly known as Hazratbal campus, lies on the western bank of Dal Lake, adjacent to the Hazratbal shrine.

Background
The university traces its origins to the University of Jammu and Kashmir, which served both regions of the erstwhile state. Following bifurcation, separate universities were constituted for the Kashmir and Jammu divisions, leading to the present University of Kashmir headquartered in Srinagar. The institution functions under the legal framework governing state universities in Jammu and Kashmir, and is recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
Campus and location
The main Hazratbal campus is spread along the shore of Dal Lake and is organised around faculties, departments, libraries, hostels, and administrative blocks. The university has expanded its presence beyond Srinagar through satellite campuses in different districts of the Kashmir Valley, including campuses set up to widen access to higher education in northern and southern parts of the region. The Allama Iqbal Library on campus is among the larger academic libraries in the region.

Its research output spans regional history and culture, environmental sciences relevant to the Himalayan region, and applied sciences.
Governance
The university is headed by a Vice-Chancellor, supported by statutory bodies such as the University Council, Syndicate, Academic Council, and Faculty boards. The Chancellor's role is held in accordance with the statutes governing state universities in the union territory.
Significance
As one of the oldest and largest universities in the Kashmir Valley, the institution plays a central role in higher education, teacher training, and research in the region. It contributes to scholarship on Kashmiri language, literature, and history, and serves as an examining and affiliating body for a wide network of colleges. Its location near Hazratbal and Dal Lake also makes the campus a recognisable landmark in Srinagar.
