Background

Theni district was formed by bifurcation from Madurai district to make administration more accessible to the population residing in the western Vaigai basin and the Cumbum Valley. The district takes its name from its principal town, Theni, which along with the adjoining municipality of Allinagaram forms a continuous urban area often referred to as Theni–Allinagaram.

Geography

The district is situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats, with the Varushanad and Andipatti hill ranges shaping its terrain. The Vaigai River and its tributaries flow through the district, and the Vaigai Dam, located near Andipatti, is an important irrigation source for the surrounding plains. The Cumbum Valley, lying between the Western Ghats and the Varushanad Hills, is a fertile agricultural belt celebrated for its production of grapes, cardamom, coffee, and other plantation crops.

Theni borders Madurai district to the east, Dindigul district to the north, Virudhunagar district to the south-east, and the state of Kerala (Idukki district) to the west.

Administration

The district is administered by a District Collector. It is divided into revenue divisions and taluks, with major towns including Theni, Allinagaram, Periyakulam, Bodinayakanur, Cumbum, Uthamapalayam, and Andipatti. Periyakulam is a long-established municipality and an important administrative and educational centre in the district.

Economy and agriculture

Agriculture and allied activities form the backbone of the local economy. The Cumbum Valley is widely known for cultivation of the Panneer Thratchai (Cumbum grape) variety, and the area is also a centre for cardamom, tea, coffee, and pepper grown on the surrounding hill slopes. Bodinayakanur is one of the major trading hubs in India for cardamom. Other significant crops include paddy, sugarcane, cotton, maize, and bananas. Small and medium industries, dairying, and trade in plantation produce also contribute to the local economy.

Tourism and notable places

  • Vaigai Dam – an irrigation reservoir on the Vaigai River with adjoining gardens.
  • Suruli Falls – a waterfall in the Western Ghats near Cumbum, mentioned in classical Tamil literature.
  • Kumbakkarai Falls – a waterfall near Periyakulam at the foot of the Kodaikanal hills.
  • Megamalai – a high-altitude wildlife and plantation area, also called the High Wavy Mountains.
  • Bodi Mettu – a hill pass on the route between Bodinayakanur and Munnar in Kerala.

Transport

The district is served by state highways connecting it to Madurai, Dindigul, Kodaikanal, and the Kerala border via the Bodi–Munnar route. Bodinayakanur is the terminus of a railway line linking the district to Madurai and the broader Indian Railways network. The nearest major airport is at Madurai.

Demographics and culture

Tamil is the principal language spoken in the district. The population is predominantly rural, with significant urban concentrations in Theni–Allinagaram, Periyakulam, Cumbum, and Bodinayakanur. Local culture reflects the broader traditions of southern Tamil Nadu, with temple festivals, jallikattu in surrounding rural belts during Pongal, and a strong agrarian community life.

Significance

Theni district is significant within Tamil Nadu for its role as a horticultural and plantation belt, its strategic location at the Tamil Nadu–Kerala border on the Western Ghats, and its contribution to irrigation through the Vaigai system. Its hill stations and waterfalls draw domestic tourists, and its produce is supplied to markets across south India.
