History
Madurai has been a seat of Tamil civilisation since antiquity and is closely associated with the Tamil Sangam tradition. It served as the capital of the early Pandya dynasty and later came under the rule of the Cholas, the Madurai Sultanate, the Vijayanagara Empire and the Madurai Nayaks, under whose patronage much of the present form of the Meenakshi Amman Temple was developed. The region subsequently passed to the Carnatic Nawabs and then to British rule, when Madurai became the headquarters of a large district in the Madras Presidency.
After Indian independence, the district was reorganised several times. Portions were carved out to form Anna district (later renamed Dindigul district) and, subsequently, Theni district, leaving Madurai district with its present extent.
Administration
The district is administered by a District Collector, with revenue divisions further subdivided into taluks, firkas and revenue villages. Local self-government is exercised through the Madurai Municipal Corporation in the city, along with municipalities, town panchayats and village panchayats in the rural areas. The district sends representatives to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and to the Lok Sabha through the Madurai parliamentary constituency.
Economy
Agriculture remains an important activity, with paddy, millets, pulses, sugarcane and cotton among the principal crops cultivated under Vaigai-fed and tank irrigation. Madurai city is the commercial hub of southern Tamil Nadu and is known for textiles, especially the Sungudi cotton sarees, jasmine flower trade (Madurai malli, which carries a Geographical Indication tag), automobile components, granite, and information technology services. Tourism, centred on temples and heritage sites, contributes significantly to the local economy.
