Background
Starbucks had explored the Indian market for several years before settling on a partnership structure suitable to local regulatory and operational conditions. In January 2012, Starbucks Corporation and Tata Global Beverages announced the formation of a 50:50 joint venture to enter India. A separate sourcing and roasting agreement was concluded with Tata Coffee, a Tata group subsidiary, to supply locally grown and roasted coffee beans to Starbucks stores in India and globally.
The joint venture was incorporated as Tata Starbucks Private Limited, with operations beginning later the same year. Following the merger of Tata Global Beverages with the consumer products business of Tata Chemicals in 2020, Tata Consumer Products became the Indian partner in the venture.
History and operations
The first Starbucks outlet in India opened in October 2012 at Elphinstone Building, Horniman Circle, in the Fort area of South Mumbai. The chain subsequently expanded to Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata and other major Indian cities.
Tata Starbucks sources a portion of its coffee from Tata Coffee's estates in Coorg, Karnataka, with roasting carried out at a dedicated facility in Kushalnagar. The Indian menu blends Starbucks's standard espresso-based offerings with locally adapted food items to suit regional preferences.
