Background

Tata Coffee traces its lineage to plantation companies operating in the Western Ghats, a region known for shade-grown Arabica and Robusta coffee. Over time, these plantation interests were consolidated under the Tata group, leading to the formation of Tata Coffee as a publicly listed company. The firm grew Arabica and Robusta varieties on estates located mainly in Coorg (Kodagu), Chikmagalur and Hassan districts of Karnataka, along with associated holdings producing pepper, cardamom and timber.

Operations

Plantations

The company manages a portfolio of estates in Karnataka where coffee is grown under shade alongside spice and timber crops. Its plantation operations have followed sustainability certification frameworks used in the global specialty coffee trade.

Instant coffee and value addition

Tata Coffee operates instant coffee manufacturing facilities producing freeze-dried and spray-dried instant coffee, much of which is exported to international markets and supplied to global beverage brands. A freeze-dried instant coffee plant was set up in Vietnam through a wholly owned subsidiary, marking the company's first major manufacturing investment outside India.

Joint ventures and brands

Tata Coffee has been associated with the Tata Coffee Grand brand of premium instant coffee in the Indian retail market. Through Tata group entities, it has also been linked with the Tata Starbucks joint venture, which sources roasted coffee from Tata Coffee's roastery in Coorg for Starbucks outlets in India.

Corporate history

  • Consolidation of plantation companies under the Tata group led to the establishment of Tata Coffee as a single coffee-focused entity.
  • Acquisition of the United States–based instant coffee maker Eight O'Clock Coffee expanded the company's global presence in branded coffee retail.
  • Setting up of a large freeze-dried instant coffee facility in Vietnam to serve Asian and global markets.
  • Reorganisation within the Tata group brought Tata Coffee's businesses under Tata Consumer Products, the group's consolidated food and beverages arm formed from the merger of Tata Global Beverages with the consumer business of Tata Chemicals.
  • A subsequent scheme of arrangement was undertaken to merge Tata Coffee's plantation and extractions businesses with Tata Consumer Products and a separate plantation entity.

Significance

Tata Coffee has played a notable role in establishing India as a significant origin in the global coffee trade, particularly for shade-grown Arabica. As one of the few large vertically integrated coffee companies in the world—covering cultivation, curing, roasting and instant coffee extraction—it has been an important supplier to multinational coffee and beverage companies, while also contributing to the development of branded retail coffee within India through the wider Tata group.
