Overview

The Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) is a state nodal agency of the Government of Tamil Nadu, India, responsible for promoting renewable energy and energy conservation in the state. It functions as the implementing arm for programmes of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India, and for the state government's own renewable energy and energy efficiency initiatives.

Background

TEDA was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu to act as the designated agency for the development and propagation of new and renewable sources of energy, including solar, wind, biomass, small hydro and waste-to-energy. It is registered as a society and operates under the administrative control of the state's Energy Department.

As the State Designated Agency under the Energy Conservation Act, 2001, TEDA also coordinates demand-side management and energy efficiency activities in Tamil Nadu in association with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).

Significance

Tamil Nadu has historically been one of India's leading states in installed wind power capacity and has expanded rapidly in solar generation. TEDA plays a coordinating role in this growth by linking central government schemes, state policies, distribution utilities and private developers, and by enabling household and institutional adoption of rooftop solar and solar water heating systems.
