Pageantry
In 1994, at the age of eighteen, Sen won the Femina Miss India contest, defeating fellow contestant Aishwarya Rai. She represented India at the Miss Universe pageant held in Manila, the Philippines, on 21 May 1994, where she was crowned the winner — making her the first Indian to receive the title. The same year, Aishwarya Rai won Miss World, and the dual victories were widely regarded as a turning point for India in the international pageant circuit.
Film Career
Sen made her acting debut in the Hindi film Dastak (1996), directed by Mahesh Bhatt. Her early notable appearances include Biwi No.1 (1999) and Sirf Tum (1999). She received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Filhaal... (2002), directed by Meghna Gulzar.

She also appeared in Tamil cinema with Ratchagan (1997). She produced and starred in I Am and the television production Dus Kahaniyaan-related ventures through her banner Tantra Entertainment.
After a hiatus from cinema, Sen returned to lead roles with the Disney+ Hotstar web series Aarya, which premiered in 2020.
