Overview
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (born 1 November 1973) is an Indian actress and former model who came to international prominence after winning the Miss World 1994 pageant. She has worked extensively in Hindi and Tamil cinema, and has also appeared in Bengali, Telugu and English-language films. Widely regarded as one of the most popular Indian film personalities of her generation, she has been honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri (2009) and by France with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Chevalier, 2012).

Background
Rai was born in Mangalore in a Tulu-speaking Bunt family to Krishnaraj Rai, a marine biologist who served in the Indian Army, and Vrinda Rai. The family later moved to Mumbai, where she completed her schooling at Arya Vidya Mandir. She initially intended to study architecture before her modelling career took precedence.
She gained early recognition through a 1993 advertisement for Pepsi alongside Aamir Khan and Mahima Chaudhry. In 1994 she was placed second in the Femina Miss India pageant, behind Sushmita Sen, before winning the Miss World title later that year in Sun City, South Africa.
Career
Early films (1997–2000)
Rai made her film debut in Mani Ratnam's Tamil film Iruvar (1997), playing a dual role. Her Hindi debut was Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya (1997) opposite Bobby Deol. She received critical attention for Jeans (1998), directed by S. Shankar, which was India's official submission to the Academy Awards that year.
Her breakthrough came with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), opposite Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn, which won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. The same year she appeared in Subhash Ghai's Taal.
Mainstream success (2002–2010)
Rai starred as Paro in Bhansali's Devdas (2002), opposite Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit; the film was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and earned her a second Filmfare Best Actress award. Other notable films from this period include Chokher Bali (2003) directed by Rituparno Ghosh, Raincoat (2004), Dhoom 2 (2006), Guru (2007), Jodhaa Akbar (2008) directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, and Enthiran (2010) directed by Shankar opposite Rajinikanth.
She made her English-language debut in Paul Mayeda Berges' Bride and Prejudice (2004), an adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and subsequently appeared in Provoked (2006), The Last Legion (2007) and The Pink Panther 2 (2009).
Later career
After a hiatus following the birth of her daughter in 2011, Rai returned with Sanjay Gupta's Jazbaa (2015), followed by Sarbjit (2016) and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), directed by Karan Johar. She reunited with Mani Ratnam for the two-part epic Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022) and Ponniyin Selvan: II (2023), based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's Tamil novel, in which she played Nandini.
Cannes Film Festival
Rai has been a regular presence at the Cannes Film Festival since 2002, when Devdas was screened there. She served on the main competition jury in 2003 under jury president Patrice Chéreau, becoming one of the few Indian actresses to do so.
Personal life
Rai married actor Abhishek Bachchan, son of Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, on 20 April 2007. The couple have a daughter, Aaradhya, born in November 2011. The family resides in Mumbai.
Public image and other work
Rai has served as a goodwill ambassador for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and as a Smile Train ambassador. She has endorsed brands including L'Oréal Paris, for which she has appeared as a global spokesperson at Cannes for many years. She has frequently been listed among the most influential and recognised Indian celebrities by international and domestic publications.
