Background

His casting as Lakshman placed him alongside Arun Govil, who played Rama, and Deepika Chikhalia, who played Sita.

Ramayan and its impact

Ramayan, produced and directed by Ramanand Sagar, was telecast on Doordarshan on Sunday mornings from 25 January 1987. The serial drew an extraordinary national viewership and is often cited as a landmark in Indian popular culture, with reports of streets emptying during its broadcast. Lahri's depiction of Lakshman — characterised by devotion to his elder brother and a fiery temperament — earned him lasting recognition.

The serial was re-telecast on Doordarshan during the nationwide lockdown in March–April 2020, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The rerun reportedly attracted record viewership for Doordarshan, renewing public interest in the original cast, including Lahri.

Later work

After Ramayan, Lahri continued to appear in television serials and occasional films, though none matched the cultural footprint of his Lakshman role. He has also been associated with mythological and devotional productions and has participated in stage performances, public events, and interviews relating to the legacy of the original Ramayan. In subsequent years he has been active on digital platforms, taking part in discussions and reunion programmes featuring the original cast.
