Arun Govil was born on 12 January 1958 in Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He moved to Mumbai in the mid-1970s, initially intending to pursue a business career before turning to acting. He began his film career with the Hindi film Paheli (1977), directed by Prashant Nanda.
Film career
During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Govil appeared in a number of Hindi films in lead and supporting roles. His notable film appearances include Sawan Ko Aane Do (1979), Saanch Ko Aanch Nahin (1979), Itni Si Baat (1981), and Lal Chunariya (1983). He also worked in regional cinema during this period.
Ramayan and television
Govil's career-defining role came when Ramanand Sagar cast him as Rama in the television serial Ramayan. The series began telecast on Doordarshan on 25 January 1987 and concluded on 31 July 1988, comprising 78 episodes. The serial drew unprecedented audiences across India and made the entire principal cast iconic figures in Indian popular culture. Govil's portrayal of Rama earned him lasting public recognition, and he is often associated with the role in subsequent decades.
