Career

Breakthrough with Arya

Sukumar made his directorial debut with Arya (2004), starring Allu Arjun and Anu Mehta, with music by Devi Sri Prasad. The film, centred on a non-conventional love triangle, was a major commercial success and established Sukumar as a director with a distinct narrative voice. It was later remade in several Indian languages.

Subsequent films

He followed Arya with Jagadam (2007) starring Ram Pothineni, and then reunited with Allu Arjun for the sequel Arya 2 (2009), which featured a darker protagonist and was noted for its unconventional characterisation. 100% Love (2011), with Naga Chaitanya and Tamannaah, was another hit centred on competitive young romance.

1: Nenokkadine (2014), starring Mahesh Babu, was a psychological thriller exploring schizophrenia, shot across multiple international locations. Although the film received mixed commercial response on release, it later acquired a cult following. Nannaku Prematho (2016), starring Jr. NTR, was a revenge drama set in London.

Rangasthalam and Pushpa

Rangasthalam (2018), starring Ram Charan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, was set in a 1980s Telugu village and dealt with rural politics, exploitation and rebellion. The film won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, and brought Sukumar wide critical acclaim.

In 2021 he directed Pushpa: The Rise – Part 1, starring Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna and Fahadh Faasil, depicting the rise of a red sandalwood smuggler in the Seshachalam forests of Andhra Pradesh. Released in multiple Indian languages, it became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of the year and earned Allu Arjun the National Film Award for Best Actor. The sequel Pushpa 2: The Rule (2024) was an even larger commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing Indian films ever made.

Production and writing

Sukumar runs the production banner Sukumar Writings, which has backed films such as Kumari 21F (2015), Darling (2010, story) and Uppena (2021), the latter marking the debut of Vaishnav Tej and Krithi Shetty and being directed by Buchi Babu Sana. He has also been credited as a story or screenplay contributor on several other Telugu films.

Style and themes

Sukumar's films are often characterised by mathematically structured screenplays, layered protagonists, non-linear emotional arcs and stylised visual design. Recurring themes include obsession, identity, social hierarchy and the tension between individual will and societal structure. He frequently collaborates with composer Devi Sri Prasad and has worked repeatedly with actors Allu Arjun and Ram Charan.

Personal life

Sukumar is married to Tabitha Sukumar. Their daughter, Sukumar Sukku (Sukku Sukumar), has worked as a costume designer in Telugu cinema, including on Pushpa: The Rise.

Significance

Sukumar is regarded as one of the most influential filmmakers of contemporary Telugu cinema. His commercial successes have helped widen the national footprint of Telugu films, and Pushpa in particular played a significant role in the post-pandemic resurgence of theatrical Indian cinema and in the cross-language appeal of Telugu productions in Hindi-speaking markets.
