Overview
St. Xavier's Catholic College of Engineering is a private engineering institution in India offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in engineering and technology. The college is located in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu, in the southernmost part of the Indian peninsula. It is run by a Catholic minority educational trust and is among several professional colleges in the region that emerged during the expansion of technical education in Tamil Nadu in the late twentieth century.
The institution is affiliated to Anna University, the state technical university that governs most engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu, and follows the curriculum, examination pattern and academic regulations prescribed by the university. The campus is situated at Chunkankadai, near the town of Nagercoil, which is the administrative headquarters of Kanyakumari district.

Background
The college was established by a Catholic educational society active in the Kottar diocese region, which has historically promoted schools and higher education institutions in southern Tamil Nadu. The institution takes its name from St. Francis Xavier, the sixteenth-century Jesuit missionary who is widely venerated in the coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Like other minority-run colleges in the state, it was set up to provide professional education to students from the surrounding region while remaining open to applicants from across India.
Academics
The academic structure follows the four-year Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) framework laid down by Anna University, with two-year Master of Engineering (M.E.) programmes at the postgraduate level. Programmes typically offered at engineering colleges of this category include:
- Civil Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical and Electronics Engineering
- Electronics and Communication Engineering
- Computer Science and Engineering
- Information Technology
The semester system, internal assessment pattern, university examinations and credit requirements are determined by Anna University regulations. Students undertake a final-year project, industrial visits and in-plant training as part of their curriculum. The college also conducts technical symposia, workshops and value-added courses to supplement classroom learning.
Campus and facilities
The campus is set in a semi-urban environment near Nagercoil, with academic blocks, departmental laboratories, drawing halls, computing centres, a central library and seminar facilities. Common engineering college facilities such as workshops for manufacturing practice, surveying fields for civil engineering students, and computing laboratories with networked systems are part of the infrastructure.
Hostels for men and women, a canteen, transport services connecting the campus with Nagercoil and nearby towns, sports grounds and a chapel reflecting the institution's Catholic character are typically present. The library subscribes to technical journals and provides digital access to research databases through the consortium arrangements available to Anna University–affiliated colleges.
Admissions
Admission to undergraduate engineering programmes is through the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) counselling conducted by the Directorate of Technical Education, Tamil Nadu, on the basis of marks obtained in the Higher Secondary Certificate examination in the relevant science subjects. Seats are filled under the government quota and management quota, with reservations for the minority community as permitted under the rules applicable to minority institutions. Postgraduate admissions are conducted through the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET) followed by centralised counselling.
Student life
Student activities include departmental associations, technical clubs, cultural festivals and sports events. Annual cultural and technical festivals bring together participants from neighbouring engineering colleges in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts. Units of the National Service Scheme (NSS), Youth Red Cross and similar bodies conduct community engagement, blood donation drives and awareness campaigns in nearby villages. The college also encourages student participation in inter-collegiate technical competitions and project exhibitions.
