Overview

Anna University is a state-run technical university located in Guindy, Chennai, in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of the principal engineering and technological universities in southern India and serves as an affiliating university for a large number of engineering colleges across Tamil Nadu. The university is named after C. N. Annadurai, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

Background

The university grew out of a cluster of long-established technical institutions in Chennai, the most prominent being the College of Engineering, Guindy (CEG), one of the oldest engineering colleges in India. Other constituent colleges historically associated with Anna University include the Madras Institute of Technology (MIT) at Chromepet, the Alagappa College of Technology (ACT), and the School of Architecture and Planning (SAP). These institutions form the core campuses of the university in and around Chennai.

Academic structure

Anna University offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in disciplines including civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics, computer science, information technology, chemical, aerospace and automobile engineering, along with architecture, planning, applied sciences, humanities and management studies. Teaching and research are organised through faculties and departments distributed across the constituent campuses.

As an affiliating university, it lays down syllabi, conducts examinations and awards degrees for a large network of government, government-aided and self-financing engineering colleges across Tamil Nadu.

Its alumni, particularly from CEG and MIT, have made notable contributions to engineering, public administration, science and industry in India and abroad.
