South Dum Dum

South Dum Dum is a city and municipality in the North 24 Parganas district of the Indian state of West Bengal. Forming part of the Kolkata urban agglomeration, it lies immediately to the north of Kolkata and adjoins the localities of Dum Dum and North Dum Dum. Administratively, the area is governed by the South Dum Dum Municipality.

Geography

South Dum Dum is situated on the northern fringe of Kolkata. It is bordered by Dum Dum to the west, North Dum Dum to the north, the Bidhannagar (Salt Lake) area to the east and Kolkata's northern wards to the south. The terrain is part of the flat Gangetic delta, with elevation close to sea level. Localities within the municipal area include Lake Town, Bangur Avenue, Dum Dum Park, Nager Bazar, Patipukur and Motijheel.

Civic administration

The South Dum Dum Municipality is responsible for civic services such as water supply, sanitation, road maintenance, public health and property tax administration. The municipal area is divided into wards, each represented by an elected councillor. The municipality functions under the West Bengal Municipal Act and is part of the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority's planning jurisdiction.

Demographics

South Dum Dum is one of the more densely populated municipalities in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area. Bengali is the predominant language, and the population includes a substantial number of families who settled in the area following the Partition of Bengal in 1947 and subsequent migrations from East Pakistan and later Bangladesh. The city has a mixed religious composition with Hindus forming the majority along with Muslim, Christian and other communities.

Transport

South Dum Dum is well connected to the rest of the Kolkata region by road, suburban rail and the Kolkata Metro.

Rail: Dum Dum Junction, served by the Eastern Railway's Sealdah division, is one of the busiest suburban rail stations in the country and lies adjacent to the municipal area. Patipukur is another local station.
Metro: The Blue Line (Line 1) of the Kolkata Metro has its northern terminus at Dum Dum, with stations such as Belgachia and Dum Dum providing access for residents.
Air: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, located in the adjacent Dum Dum area, is the nearest airport.
Road: Major arteries such as Jessore Road, V.I.P. Road and the Belgharia Expressway pass through or near the city.

Education

The municipal area hosts a number of schools and colleges affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Dum Dum Motijheel College and Dum Dum Motijheel Rabindra Mahavidyalaya, affiliated to the West Bengal State University, are among the higher education institutions located in the area.

Economy

South Dum Dum's economy is largely service-oriented, with retail markets at Nager Bazar and Lake Town, small and medium enterprises, and a sizeable share of residents commuting to Kolkata for employment. Real estate development has been significant in localities such as Lake Town, Bangur Avenue and Dum Dum Park.

Culture

As in much of suburban Kolkata, Durga Puja is the principal annual festival, with several community pujas in Lake Town, Bangur, Dum Dum Park and Nager Bazar drawing large crowds. Other major observances include Kali Puja, Saraswati Puja, Poila Boishakh and Christmas, particularly in localities with older Christian communities.
