North Dum Dum is a city and municipality in the North 24 Parganas district of the Indian state of West Bengal. It forms part of the Kolkata Metropolitan Area and lies to the north of Dum Dum and adjoining areas of the Kolkata urban agglomeration. The municipal area covers a number of well-known neighbourhoods including Birati, Nimta, Belgharia (in part) and Madhyamgram's southern fringes.

Geography

North Dum Dum is located on the northern outskirts of Kolkata. It is bounded by Dum Dum Municipality to the south, South Dum Dum Municipality, and Madhyamgram Municipality to the north. The terrain is part of the lower Gangetic delta plain and lies at a low elevation above sea level. The area is largely urbanised, with dense residential development interspersed with markets, schools and small industrial units.

Civic administration

The town is administered by the North Dum Dum Municipality, which is divided into wards represented by elected councillors. The municipality is responsible for local services such as water supply, sanitation, roads, street lighting, public health and property tax administration. North Dum Dum falls within the jurisdiction of the Barasat police district for law and order matters in parts of its area.

Transport

North Dum Dum is well connected to central Kolkata and to the wider metropolitan area:

  • Rail: Birati railway station on the Sealdah–Hasnabad–Bangaon line of the Eastern Railway serves the town. Dum Dum Junction, a major suburban hub, lies a short distance to the south.
  • Road: Jessore Road (National Highway 12, formerly NH 34) passes through the area, linking it to central Kolkata, the airport and points further north.
  • Air: Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport at Dum Dum is located in the immediate vicinity.
  • Metro: The northern extensions of the Kolkata Metro provide connectivity from nearby Dum Dum and Noapara stations.

Demographics

According to the 2011 Census of India, North Dum Dum is classified as a Municipality with a substantial urban population. Bengali is the principal language. The town has a mixed religious composition, with Hindus forming the majority and a Muslim minority, alongside smaller Christian and other communities. Literacy rates in the municipality are high, in line with the broader Kolkata metropolitan area.

Economy

The economy of North Dum Dum is predominantly service-oriented, with a large share of residents commuting to workplaces in Kolkata. Local commerce is centred on neighbourhood markets, retail establishments and small-scale enterprises. Real estate development has been a significant driver of growth, supported by proximity to the airport and good rail connectivity.

Education

The municipality contains numerous primary and secondary schools affiliated to the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education and the CBSE/ICSE boards. Several colleges affiliated to the West Bengal State University and the University of Calcutta are located in or near the area.

Significance

As part of the Kolkata Metropolitan Area, North Dum Dum plays a role as a residential and commuter town serving the metropolis. Its location on Jessore Road and the Sealdah suburban rail network has historically made it a corridor between the city of Kolkata and the northern parts of North 24 Parganas.
