Background

Prior to 2016, the area now constituting Siddipet district was part of the undivided Medak district. As part of a wider reorganisation under the Telangana government led by Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao, the number of districts in the state was increased from ten to thirty-one, with Siddipet being one of the newly created units. Subsequent reorganisations later raised the total number of districts in Telangana further.

Geography

Siddipet district lies in the northern-central part of Telangana. It is bordered by several districts of the state, including parts of the erstwhile Medak, Karimnagar and Warangal regions. The terrain is largely part of the Deccan Plateau, with agriculture, tank irrigation and the influence of major irrigation projects shaping the rural landscape. The Manjira and Maner river basins, along with lift-irrigation works connected to the Kaleshwaram and earlier projects, have an effect on the district's water resources.

Administration

The district is administered by a District Collector appointed by the Government of Telangana. For administrative convenience it is divided into revenue divisions and further into mandals, each headed by a tahsildar. Local self-government is exercised through gram panchayats in rural areas and municipalities in urban centres, with Siddipet town serving as the principal urban hub.

  • Siddipet revenue division
  • Husnabad revenue division
  • Gajwel revenue division

Economy

The economy of Siddipet district is predominantly agrarian. Major crops include paddy, maize, cotton, and pulses, supported by tank-fed and canal irrigation. Allied activities such as dairy, poultry and small-scale agro-processing are present. The district has also seen public investment in irrigation infrastructure and rural development schemes promoted by the state government.

Politics

Siddipet has been politically significant in Telangana, particularly for the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (later Bharat Rashtra Samithi). The Gajwel Assembly constituency, which falls within the district, has been represented by K. Chandrashekar Rao, who served as the first Chief Minister of Telangana. The Siddipet Assembly constituency has long been associated with T. Harish Rao, a senior leader and minister in successive Telangana governments.

Significance

The creation of Siddipet district was intended to decentralise administration, improve service delivery and accelerate development in the region. The district has been a focus area for state-level initiatives in irrigation, drinking water supply (including the Mission Bhagiratha programme), and rural housing.
