It was established to extend organised medical education to the Vindhya region, which had limited access to tertiary care prior to its founding. The institution functions under the Department of Medical Education, Government of Madhya Pradesh.
Academics
SSMC offers the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) undergraduate programme, along with postgraduate degrees and diplomas across a range of clinical and pre-clinical specialities. Admission to undergraduate seats is conducted through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG), while postgraduate admission is through NEET-PG, in line with national norms.
The departments at the college typically include Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine, General Medicine, General Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Orthopaedics, Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Anaesthesiology, Radiodiagnosis and Dentistry.
Affiliated hospitals
Clinical training is imparted primarily at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital (SGMH) and Gandhi Memorial Hospital (GMH), which together serve as the principal teaching hospitals attached to the college. These hospitals provide outpatient, inpatient, emergency and specialist services and act as referral centres for districts such as Rewa, Satna, Sidhi, Singrauli, Shahdol and parts of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.
Significance
As the principal medical college of the Vindhya region, SSMC plays an important role in producing medical graduates and postgraduates, in delivering tertiary care to a largely rural and semi-urban catchment, and in supporting public health programmes administered by the state government. Its associated hospitals also function as training grounds for nursing and paramedical students.
