Background

Shalimar Paints traces its origins to the early twentieth century, when paint manufacturing on a modern industrial scale began in colonial India. The company was established in 1902 and is generally cited as the first large-scale paints and varnish manufacturing operation in the South Asian region. Over the decades it transitioned from a colonial-era enterprise into an Indian-owned public limited company.

Operations

The company's product portfolio is broadly divided into two segments:

  • Decorative coatings — interior and exterior emulsions, enamels, wood finishes, distempers, primers, and putties used in homes and commercial buildings.
  • Industrial and protective coatings — products designed for steel structures, pipelines, refineries, power plants, railways, and marine surfaces, including high-performance epoxies and polyurethane systems.

Shalimar Paints distributes its products through a dealer and retailer network across India, supported by manufacturing facilities and depots in different parts of the country.

Significance

As one of the earliest entrants in the Indian paint industry, Shalimar Paints has historical significance in the development of organised paint manufacturing in the country. The brand has supplied protective coatings for several large public infrastructure projects in India, particularly in the steel, power, and petrochemical sectors.
