The college was established in the early twentieth century during the British colonial period. Its founding was supported through philanthropic contributions, with the Gordhandas Sunderdas family playing a central role in endowing the institution, whose name it bears. King Edward Memorial Hospital, the associated teaching hospital, was named in honour of King Edward VII and was developed as a large civic hospital to address the healthcare needs of a rapidly growing Bombay.
Over the decades following Indian independence in 1947, the institution transitioned fully under municipal and state governance.
