Background
Before the formation of MUHS, health sciences colleges in Maharashtra were affiliated to several general universities across the state, which made uniform regulation of curricula, examinations and standards difficult. To address this, the Government of Maharashtra created a dedicated health sciences university with statewide jurisdiction, on the model of similar specialised universities established in other Indian states. Nashik was selected as the location of the headquarters.
Academic structure
The university brings together a wide range of professional health disciplines under a single academic umbrella. Its affiliated institutions typically include:
- Faculty of Medicine (allopathic medical colleges)
- Faculty of Dentistry
- Faculty of Ayurveda
- Faculty of Homoeopathy
- Faculty of Unani
- Faculty of Nursing
- Faculty of Physiotherapy and allied health sciences
MUHS prescribes curricula, conducts examinations, awards degrees and diplomas at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and supervises doctoral research in the health sciences.
Functions and significance
As a single affiliating university for health sciences in Maharashtra, MUHS plays a central role in:
- Standardising syllabi and examination patterns across diverse streams of medicine.
- Recognising and inspecting affiliated colleges in coordination with statutory regulators such as the National Medical Commission, the Dental Council of India, the Central Council of Indian Medicine and the Indian Nursing Council.
- Promoting research in modern medicine and traditional Indian systems of medicine.
- Conducting continuing medical education and faculty development programmes.
The university's existence allows the state government to maintain uniform academic standards across one of India's largest networks of health sciences colleges, given Maharashtra's significant share of national medical and dental seats.
Administration
MUHS is governed under a state legislative framework, with the Governor of Maharashtra serving as its Chancellor. The Vice-Chancellor is the principal academic and executive officer, supported by statutory bodies such as the Management Council, the Academic Council and faculty-level boards. The university also operates regional centres to coordinate affiliated colleges spread across different parts of the state.
