Background
The Government of India set up two new Schools of Planning and Architecture in 2008, in Bhopal and Vijayawada, modelled on the existing School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. The intent was to expand specialised capacity in architectural and urban planning education in India in response to rapid urbanisation and the growing need for trained professionals in built-environment fields.
SPA Bhopal initially functioned from a temporary campus and was subsequently developed with a dedicated campus in Bhopal. Like the other SPAs, it was conferred the status of an Institute of National Importance through a parliamentary amendment, granting it the authority to award its own degrees.
Academics
The institute offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in architecture and planning, along with doctoral research. Typical programme areas include:
- Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) and Bachelor of Planning (B.Plan.)
- Master's programmes in fields such as architecture, urban and regional planning, urban design, environmental planning, landscape architecture, and conservation
- Doctoral (Ph.D.) research in architecture and planning
Admission to undergraduate programmes is conducted through national-level entrance processes, while postgraduate admissions are based on GATE scores and institute-level selection procedures.
Governance
SPA Bhopal is governed by a Board of Governors, with academic policy guided by a Senate. The institute is headed by a Director, and the President of India serves as the Visitor. Funding is provided through the Ministry of Education.
Significance
As one of only three Schools of Planning and Architecture in India with the status of an Institute of National Importance, SPA Bhopal plays a notable role in producing architects, planners, and design professionals for central India and the country at large. Its presence in Bhopal complements other higher education institutions in the city, including the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, contributing to Bhopal's profile as a centre for technical and design education.
