Background

SPA Vijayawada is one of three Schools of Planning and Architecture established by the Government of India, the others being the parent institution in New Delhi and another at Bhopal. The Vijayawada institute was set up to expand specialised education in architecture and urban planning beyond the original Delhi school, addressing growing demand for trained professionals in the built environment, urban development, and regional planning across southern India.

Like its sister institutions, SPAV was conceived as a stand-alone, mono-disciplinary institution focused exclusively on architecture, planning and design, rather than as a department within a larger engineering or technology campus.

Academic programmes

The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Its core areas include:

  • Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) and Bachelor of Planning (B.Plan.)
  • Master's programmes in fields such as Architecture, Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Design, Environmental Planning, and Transport Planning
  • Doctoral (Ph.D.) research in architecture and planning

Admissions to the undergraduate programmes are conducted through national-level entrance examinations along with the centralised counselling administered for centrally funded technical institutions.

Governance

SPAV functions under the Ministry of Education of the Government of India. It is governed by a Board of Governors, with academic affairs overseen by a Senate. The institute is headed by a Director, supported by deans and heads of departments responsible for architecture, planning and related areas.

Significance

As one of only a small number of institutions in India devoted solely to architecture and planning at the national level, SPA Vijayawada plays a notable role in producing architects, urban planners and design professionals. Its graduates work in government planning bodies, municipal and development authorities, private architectural practice, real estate and infrastructure consultancies, academia and research.
