Overview
Sathyaraj is an Indian film actor, producer and former television presenter who works predominantly in Tamil cinema. Active since the late 1970s, he has appeared in over 200 films across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Hindi languages. While he began his career largely in villain roles, he transitioned into lead roles during the 1980s and later became known for character and supporting parts. He gained nationwide and international recognition for his portrayal of Kattappa in S. S. Rajamouli's two-part epic Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017).

Background and early life
Sathyaraj was born on 3 October 1954 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, into a Tamil-speaking family. He completed his schooling in Coimbatore and graduated from a local college before moving to Chennai in pursuit of a film career. He is known to be a follower of the rationalist tradition associated with E. V. Ramasamy (Periyar) and has frequently spoken on social and political issues in Tamil Nadu.
Career
Early years (1978–1984)
Sathyaraj made his debut with Annai Oru Aalayam (1979), directed by P. Bharathiraja. In his early years, he was typecast as a villain, appearing opposite leading men such as Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan in films of the late 1970s and early 1980s. His menacing screen presence earned him steady work in antagonist roles during this period.
Rise as a leading actor (mid-1980s–1990s)
The shift to lead roles came with films such as Mr. Bharath (1986) and Kadamai Kanniyam Kattupaadu (1987). His collaborations with directors like R. K. Selvamani and Manivannan produced commercially successful action and message-oriented films through the late 1980s and 1990s. Notable films from this phase include Vedham Pudhithu (1987), directed by P. Bharathiraja, in which he played a Brahmin landlord challenging caste hierarchies, and Amaidhi Padai (1994), directed by Manivannan, where his portrayal of a corrupt politician became iconic in Tamil cinema. Other significant works from this period include Walter Vetrivel (1993), Villadhi Villain (1995) and Suriyan (1992).
Periyar and biographical roles
In 2007, Sathyaraj played the title role in Periyar, a biographical film on E. V. Ramasamy directed by Gnana Rajasekaran. The film was screened at several international film festivals and was widely appreciated for its production values and Sathyaraj's restrained performance.
Character roles and pan-Indian recognition (2010s–present)
From the late 2000s, Sathyaraj transitioned to character and supporting roles. He appeared in films such as Naan Kadavul (2009), Aaranya Kaandam (2011), Mankatha (2011), Raavanan (2010) and Velaiilla Pattadhari (2014).
His portrayal of the loyal slave-warrior Kattappa in S. S. Rajamouli's Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017) brought him pan-Indian and international recognition. The cliffhanger question "Why did Kattappa kill Baahubali?" became a widely discussed cultural moment in Indian cinema between the two releases.
Subsequent work includes Mersal (2017), Bigil (2019), Soorarai Pottru (2020) and his Hindi debut Chennai Express (2013) opposite Shah Rukh Khan, in which he played the antagonist.
Television
Sathyaraj hosted the Tamil game show Vetri, the Tamil adaptation of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, telecast on Sun TV.

Personal life
Sathyaraj is married to Maheswari. The couple have two children: their son Sibiraj is also a Tamil film actor, and their daughter is Divya. Sathyaraj has publicly identified himself as a rationalist and has been associated with Dravidian and Periyarist thought.
Awards and recognition
Sathyaraj has received Tamil Nadu State Film Awards on multiple occasions for his performances, in addition to Filmfare Awards South nominations. He was honoured with the Kalaimamani award by the Government of Tamil Nadu for his contributions to Tamil cinema.

Sathyaraj's career is notable for its longevity and range.
