Background

Rajamouli was born in Raichur, Karnataka, into a Telugu family from Kovvur, West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. His father, K. V. Vijayendra Prasad, is an established screenwriter who has written several of Rajamouli's films. Composer M. M. Keeravani, known internationally for the song "Naatu Naatu", is a paternal cousin. Rajamouli began his career working in television, directing episodes of the Telugu series Santhi Nivasam under filmmaker K. Raghavendra Rao, before transitioning to feature films.

Career

Early films (2001–2008)

Rajamouli's debut feature, Student No. 1 (2001), starring N. T. Rama Rao Jr., was a commercial success. He followed it with Simhadri (2003), Sye (2004) — one of the earliest sports films in Telugu, centred on rugby — Chhatrapati (2005) with Prabhas, Vikramarkudu (2006), and Yamadonga (2007). These films established his reputation for high-energy action and clear narrative craft.

Magadheera and Eega (2009–2012)

Magadheera (2009), a reincarnation fantasy starring Ram Charan and Kajal Aggarwal, became one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of its time and demonstrated Rajamouli's ambition with visual effects. Maryada Ramanna (2010), inspired by Buster Keaton's Our Hospitality, was followed by Eega (2012), a fantasy revenge film whose protagonist is reincarnated as a housefly. Eega received wide critical acclaim and was screened at international festivals.

Baahubali series (2015–2017)

Baahubali: The Beginning (2015) and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), produced by Arka Media Works, were shot simultaneously and released as a two-part epic. Starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, Tamannaah, and Ramya Krishnan, the films were among the most expensive Indian productions of their period. Baahubali 2 became, at the time of its release, the highest-grossing Indian film and was a major commercial success in dubbed Hindi, Tamil, and Malayalam markets as well as overseas.

RRR and after (2022–present)

RRR (2022), starring N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan, is a fictionalised story set in the 1920s involving real-life revolutionaries Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem. The film achieved extensive global distribution and theatrical runs in North America, Japan, and Europe. Its song "Naatu Naatu", composed by M. M. Keeravani with lyrics by Chandrabose, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 2023, while the film also won the Golden Globe in the same category. RRR brought Rajamouli to mainstream international attention and led to extensive coverage in Western publications.

Style and themes

Rajamouli's films are noted for their reliance on epic structure, mythological motifs drawn from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, and a strong focus on heroism, loyalty, and revenge. He typically collaborates with a regular team that includes screenwriter Vijayendra Prasad, composer M. M. Keeravani, cinematographer K. K. Senthil Kumar, and costume designer Rama Rajamouli. His approach combines pre-visualised action choreography with extensive use of computer-generated imagery and large-scale physical sets.
