Background
The institution was established as Sathyabama Engineering College and was originally affiliated with the University of Madras, and later with Anna University. It was subsequently conferred deemed-to-be university status by the Government of India under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, after which it functioned as Sathyabama University. It was later renamed Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology following changes to UGC regulations governing the use of the term "university" by deemed institutions.
