Salim, the elder brother, trained in keyboard and Indian classical music, while Sulaiman developed as a percussionist and producer. Before becoming a composing duo, they worked extensively in advertising jingles and as session musicians and arrangers in the Mumbai film industry.
Career
Early work and jingles
The brothers first established themselves through advertising music, composing jingles for a wide range of Indian and multinational brands. This work served as a training ground for their later film and album projects, building a reputation for melodic strength combined with contemporary production.
Hindi film music
Salim–Sulaiman gained wider recognition with their work for Yash Raj Films and other major Hindi film banners. Notable Hindi film soundtracks composed by them include Chak De! India, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (background score), Fashion, Kurbaan, Patiala House, Band Baaja Baaraat, Mausam, London Dreams, Aaja Nachle and Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, among others. Their style typically combines orchestral arrangements with Indian melodic elements, electronic textures and Sufi-influenced vocals.
Independent and devotional music
Beyond films, the duo has released a substantial body of independent music, including singles and albums centred on Sufi, devotional and inspirational themes. Salim Merchant is also active as a playback singer and live performer, often featuring on tracks composed by the duo.
Television and live performance
Salim Merchant has appeared as a judge and mentor on Indian music reality shows, including seasons of Indian Idol and Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. The duo regularly performs live across India and internationally, with concerts featuring film hits alongside Sufi and original compositions.
Other projects
The duo has contributed music to international and cross-cultural projects, including collaborations with overseas artistes and work in animation and short-form content. They also operate a music production setup in Mumbai through which they release independent material and mentor newer artistes.
Style and significance
Salim–Sulaiman are recognised for blending traditional Indian elements—such as qawwali, Sufi vocals and folk motifs—with mainstream Bollywood pop arrangements and global production techniques. Songs like "Chak De India" from the film of the same name and "Ainvayi Ainvayi" from Band Baaja Baaraat have become widely recognised tracks within Hindi popular music. Their work has been acknowledged at major Indian film and music awards, including the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for Chak De! India.
