Plot
Kabir Khan, a former captain of the Indian men's hockey team, is publicly vilified after India loses a final to Pakistan, with a missed penalty stroke by him being interpreted as match-fixing due to his Muslim identity. Years later, he is appointed coach of the Indian women's national field hockey team, a side composed of sixteen players drawn from across the country, each carrying regional, linguistic, and personal differences. Kabir works to mould the players into a unified team, confronting individual egos, social prejudice, and institutional indifference. The team eventually represents India at the Hockey World Cup, where they win the title, restoring Kabir's reputation.

Production
The screenplay by Jaideep Sahni was reportedly inspired in part by the Indian women's hockey team's gold medal at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Auditions for the sixteen player roles were conducted across India, with the makers preferring actresses who could be trained to play hockey credibly on camera. The cast underwent extended physical and hockey training before and during the shoot. Mir Ranjan Negi, the former Indian goalkeeper, served as a hockey consultant and trainer; his own career, marked by accusations after the 1982 Asian Games loss to Pakistan, is widely cited as a partial inspiration for the character of Kabir Khan, although the makers maintained that the film was a work of fiction.
Filming took place in Mumbai, Australia, and other locations representing Melbourne, where the climactic World Cup sequences were staged. Sudeep Chatterjee handled cinematography, with the hockey sequences shot to emphasise tactical realism rather than stylised action.
Music
The soundtrack was composed by Salim–Sulaiman with lyrics by Jaideep Sahni. The title track "Chak De India", sung by Sukhwinder Singh, Salim Merchant, and Marianne D'Cruz, became a widely used anthem at Indian sporting events. Other tracks include "Badal Pe Paon Hain", "Maula Mere Le Le Meri Jaan", and "Hockey Khel Tu".
Release and reception
The film was released theatrically on 10 August 2007, ahead of the Independence Day weekend. It received widespread critical acclaim for its writing, direction, ensemble performances, and Shah Rukh Khan's restrained portrayal of Kabir Khan. The film was a major commercial success in India and overseas markets.
Awards
Chak De! India received the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment at the 55th National Film Awards. At the 53rd Filmfare Awards, it won Best Film, Best Actor for Shah Rukh Khan, and was nominated in several other categories. It also won multiple Screen Awards, IIFA Awards, Producers Guild Film Awards, and Zee Cine Awards.
Significance
Chak De! India is credited with renewing mainstream interest in Indian field hockey at a time when the sport's domestic profile had declined. The title song became a fixture at Indian cricket matches, hockey tournaments, and political and corporate events as a generic motivational anthem. The film is also noted for its treatment of communal prejudice, regional diversity, and gender in Indian sport, presenting the women's team as a microcosm of the country. It is frequently included in lists of the best Indian sports films and is studied in discussions of Bollywood's engagement with nationalism, identity, and ensemble narratives.
