Background

The SRS Group, originally based in the National Capital Region, expanded during the 2000s into multiple consumer-facing businesses. Its cinema arm, branded SRS Cinemas, was launched as part of a broader strategy to anchor SRS-operated shopping malls and lifestyle complexes with in-house entertainment offerings. Multiplex cinemas were typically co-located with the group's food courts and retail outlets in tier-I and tier-II cities.

Operations

SRS Cinemas operated multi-screen properties featuring Indian and international film releases, with screens distributed across cities in Haryana, Delhi NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and other states in northern and central India. The chain competed with larger national multiplex operators during the period of rapid multiplex expansion in India in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

Decline

The cinema chain ceased operations as the parent SRS Group encountered severe financial difficulties, which affected its listed and unlisted entities and led to the wind-down of several of its consumer businesses. As a result, SRS Cinemas is no longer an active multiplex operator in India.

Significance

During its years of operation, SRS Cinemas was among the regional multiplex brands that contributed to the growth of organised film exhibition in northern Indian cities outside the major metros, particularly in mid-sized urban centres where mall-based multiplexes were a relatively new phenomenon.
