The institution is part of a network founded by the SRM Group, whose flagship institution is SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) in Kattankulathur, Tamil Nadu. The Andhra Pradesh campus was conceived as a research-oriented university with an emphasis on interdisciplinary education, international partnerships and student exchange.

The university is organised into several schools, including:
- School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS)
- School of Liberal Arts and Basic Sciences
- Paari School of Business
- School of Law
Programmes are offered at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral levels. Campus
The campus is situated in the Neerukonda area within the Amaravati capital region, in proximity to the cities of Vijayawada and Guntur. It includes academic blocks, research laboratories, a central library, residential hostels for students, faculty housing, and sports and recreational facilities.
Research and collaborations
SRM University–AP has emphasised research output and has entered into academic collaborations with foreign universities for student exchange, semester-abroad programmes and joint research. Significance
As one of the early private universities to begin operations within the Amaravati capital region, SRM University–AP forms part of the higher-education ecosystem that the Andhra Pradesh government sought to develop alongside the planned capital. It contributes to the state's effort to expand opportunities for technical and professional education within Andhra Pradesh, reducing the need for students to migrate to other states for similar programmes.
