Background

The college is one of three engineering colleges run by the R. M. D. group, the others being R. M. K. Engineering College and R. M. K. College of Engineering and Technology. The institutions were founded under the patronage of the trust associated with the family of R. S. Munirathinam, an industrialist and educationist from Tamil Nadu. The Kavaraipettai campus, situated along the Chennai–Kolkata national highway corridor north of Chennai, hosts all three sister colleges within proximity.

Academics

RMDEC offers Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programmes across several disciplines, with admissions through the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA) counselling process based on Class 12 marks. Postgraduate programmes include Master of Engineering (M.E.) in select specialisations and Master of Business Administration (MBA). The institution also supports research scholars registered with Anna University.

The Kavaraipettai campus comprises academic blocks, departmental laboratories, a central library, computing facilities, hostels for men and women, sports grounds, and transport links to Chennai and surrounding towns. Students share certain facilities and inter-collegiate events with the neighbouring R. M. K. institutions.

Accreditation and recognition

RMDEC has been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) for selected programmes and has been assessed by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The college periodically participates in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Ministry of Education.

Student life

Departmental associations, technical societies, and a placement and training cell organise symposia, hackathons, industrial visits, and recruitment drives. Cultural and sporting events are conducted alongside the sister colleges of the R. M. D. group, and students participate in inter-college competitions under Anna University's zonal calendar.

Significance
