Background
The university is named after Pandit Ravishankar Shukla, the first Chief Minister of the erstwhile Madhya Pradesh state. At the time of its establishment in 1964, the present state of Chhattisgarh was part of Madhya Pradesh, and the university was founded by the Government of Madhya Pradesh to serve as a major centre of higher learning in the region.
