Geography
Raipur lies on the Chhattisgarh plains, in the basin of the Mahanadi river system, with the Kharun river flowing close to the city. The surrounding region is largely agricultural, while the eastern and southern parts of the state extend into forested and mineral-rich tracts. The city has a tropical wet and dry climate, with hot summers, a monsoon season from June to September, and mild winters.
History
Raipur has a long history associated with the Kalachuri (Haihaya) dynasty of Ratanpur, who later established a branch at Raipur. Local tradition links the founding of the present city to Raja Brahmadeo of the Kalachuri line. The region subsequently came under the Marathas in the 18th century and passed to the British in 1854, when it was incorporated into the Central Provinces. During the colonial period, Raipur emerged as a district headquarters and a market town for surrounding agricultural produce.
After Indian independence, Raipur was part of Madhya Pradesh. With the reorganisation of states and the long-standing demand for a separate Chhattisgarh, the new state was created in 2000 and Raipur was designated its capital.
Administration
The city is administered by the Raipur Municipal Corporation. It is the headquarters of Raipur district and Raipur division. Major state-level institutions, including the Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha (Legislative Assembly) and the seat of the state government, are located in and around the city. A new administrative and political capital area, Naya Raipur (officially Atal Nagar), has been developed as a planned greenfield city in the vicinity to host government offices and institutional campuses.
Economy
Raipur is one of the principal commercial centres of central India. It has long been a major trading hub for rice, earning it the popular epithet of a rice-trading centre, and is also significant in the trade of pulses and timber. The city and its surroundings host a large number of steel, iron and sponge iron units, aluminium rolling mills, and cement and engineering industries, supported by Chhattisgarh's reserves of coal, iron ore, limestone and bauxite. Urla and Siltara are among the major industrial areas around the city.
