Plot and setting

The narrative follows Pathaan, an exiled Indian intelligence operative belonging to a covert Research and Analysis Wing unit, who returns to confront a rogue former agent, Jim, leading a private terror outfit named Outfit X. The story unfolds across multiple international locations and revolves around a biological threat aimed at India. The film weaves in cameo appearances connecting it to other titles in the YRF Spy Universe.

Production

The project was officially announced by Yash Raj Films in 2021 as part of the studio's 50th anniversary slate. Principal photography was conducted across several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Spain, Turkey, Russia, Italy, France and India, with action sequences choreographed by an international team of stunt coordinators. Casey O'Neill served as the action director for major set pieces.

The film's soundtrack was composed by Vishal–Shekhar, with lyrics by Kumaar. The promotional song Besharam Rang, picturised on Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, was released ahead of the film and attracted public attention, including objections from certain political quarters over costume choices, which were later partly addressed by the filmmakers in coordination with the Central Board of Film Certification.

Release and reception

Pathaan released worldwide on 25 January 2023 in standard, IMAX and other premium formats. The film opened to large audiences and registered record-breaking box office figures for a Hindi film in its opening week, both in India and in overseas markets. It became one of the highest-grossing Indian films and was credited with a revival of footfalls in Hindi cinema after a period of underperformance for several big-budget releases.

Critical reception was generally positive, with reviewers highlighting the action choreography, production design, and the on-screen presence of the lead cast, while some critics noted the conventional spy-thriller plotting.

Significance

Pathaan is considered a landmark release for Hindi cinema in the post-pandemic period. It expanded the YRF Spy Universe by establishing direct narrative crossovers, most notably through a featured appearance by Salman Khan reprising his role as Tiger. The success of the film was widely cited in industry discussions on theatrical viability of star-led action tentpoles in India.

Sequel and franchise

Following the film's commercial performance, Yash Raj Films confirmed continuation of the character within the spy universe. Pathaan also features in Tiger 3 (2023) through a crossover sequence, reinforcing the shared-universe approach of the franchise.
