Production
Panchayat was produced by TVF, the digital studio founded by Arunabh Kumar that had earlier produced popular Indian web series such as Permanent Roommates and Kota Factory. The show was shot largely on location, with extensive filming in Mahodiya village in the Sehore district of Madhya Pradesh, which serves as the on-screen Phulera. The use of natural light, ambient sound and a largely non-glamorised visual style contributes to the show's documentary-like texture.

Reception and significance
Panchayat has been received as one of the defining Indian web series of its era. Critics have highlighted its restrained humour, well-observed characters and avoidance of the urban-centric storytelling that dominates much of the Indian streaming landscape. The series has been credited with bringing renewed mainstream attention to stories set in small-town and rural India, and with reinforcing TVF's reputation for grounded, character-driven content.
The show has won and been nominated for multiple awards at the Filmfare OTT Awards and other Indian streaming awards, with recognition for its writing, direction and ensemble cast. Several of its supporting actors, including Chandan Roy, Faisal Malik and Durgesh Kumar, gained wider recognition through the series.
Themes
- Panchayati Raj governance: The series depicts the everyday functioning of a Gram Panchayat under the three-tier local government system established by the 73rd Constitutional Amendment.
- Pradhan Pati phenomenon: Manju Devi is the elected Pradhan, while her husband effectively conducts the role, reflecting a real and widely discussed pattern in Indian rural politics.
- Migration and aspiration: Abhishek's reluctance to remain in the village and his preparation for competitive examinations mirror the aspirations of many small-town Indian graduates.
- Rural-urban contrast: The cultural distance between the city-educated protagonist and his colleagues drives much of the show's humour and emotional arc.
