Background

TVF was started by Arunabh Kumar, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus, who envisioned an alternative to traditional Indian television by producing content tailored to internet audiences. The venture began as an online channel publishing comedy sketches and parodies aimed at urban Indian youth. Early sketches such as Rowdies, a parody of the reality show Roadies, and Qtiyapa-branded videos helped TVF build an early online following.

History and Timeline

Early years

TVF began publishing comedy content on YouTube in the early 2010s. Its early output consisted of short-form sketches, parodies of Bollywood films, music videos, and topical satire. The team gradually expanded into longer narrative formats.

Move into web series

Permanent Roommates, released in 2014, is generally considered one of the earliest scripted Indian web series. Created by Biswapati Sarkar and directed by Sameer Saxena, the show followed a young couple navigating long-distance commitment. Its success established the viability of original Indian web series and brought wider recognition to TVF and to actors such as Sumeet Vyas and Nidhi Singh.

Pitchers and expansion

In 2015, TVF released Pitchers, a series about four friends who quit their jobs to launch a startup. The show received critical and popular acclaim and is frequently cited as a landmark in Indian digital storytelling. The same year, TVF launched its independent streaming platform, TVFPlay.

Later productions

TVF subsequently produced a range of widely viewed series, including Tripling (a road-trip comedy with Sumeet Vyas, Amol Parashar, and Maanvi Gagroo), Kota Factory (a black-and-white drama about students in Kota's coaching ecosystem), Aspirants (centred on UPSC civil services aspirants in Delhi), Hostel Daze, Yeh Meri Family, and Gullak. Several of these shows were distributed through partnerships with platforms such as Netflix, SonyLIV, and Amazon Prime Video. Panchayat, produced by TVF for Amazon Prime Video and starring Jitendra Kumar, Raghubir Yadav, and Neena Gupta, became one of the most popular Indian streaming series.

Leadership change

In 2017, founder Arunabh Kumar stepped down as chief executive officer following allegations made against him on social media. Dhawal Gusain subsequently took over as chief executive officer, with the company continuing to function as a production house under a broader management team.

Content and style

TVF productions are generally characterised by:

  • Realistic depictions of middle-class Indian life and aspirations.
  • Themes drawn from coaching institutes, hostels, civil services preparation, startups, and small-town India.
  • Ensemble casts and naturalistic dialogue, often in Hindi with regional inflections.
  • An emphasis on writers and creators alongside actors, with recurring contributors such as Biswapati Sarkar, Sameer Saxena, Amit Golani, and Deepak Kumar Mishra.

Significance

TVF is regarded as one of the founding institutions of the Indian web series industry. By demonstrating that long-form scripted content could attract large audiences and advertiser interest online, it influenced the development of digital programming strategies adopted by streaming platforms and traditional studios in India. Several actors, writers, and directors who began their careers at TVF have moved into mainstream cinema and OTT production.
