Geography
Padrauna is situated in the eastern Tarai region of Uttar Pradesh, on the Indo-Gangetic plain. The terrain around the town is largely flat and agricultural, drained by tributaries of the Ghaghara and Gandak river systems. Sugarcane is the dominant crop in the surrounding countryside, and the area forms part of the sugarcane belt of eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Administration
Padrauna functions as the district headquarters of Kushinagar district, which was carved out of the erstwhile Deoria district in 1994. The town hosts the offices of the District Magistrate, the Superintendent of Police, the district court, and other district-level departments. Civic administration within the town is handled by a municipal board (Nagar Palika Parishad).
For Lok Sabha elections the town falls within the Kushi Nagar Lok Sabha constituency, and the local Vidhan Sabha seat is the Padrauna Assembly constituency.
Economy
The local economy is closely linked to agriculture and agro-processing. Sugarcane cultivation supports a network of sugar mills in the wider Kushinagar–Deoria region, and Padrauna serves as a market and service centre for the surrounding rural population. Trade, small-scale manufacturing, retail, education, and government employment are the principal urban occupations.
Transport
Padrauna is connected by road to Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Deoria and the towns of north Bihar. It is served by Padrauna railway station on the metre-gauge/converted line of the North Eastern Railway in the Gorakhpur region. The nearest major airport is Kushinagar International Airport, while Gorakhpur Airport also serves the area.
Culture and surroundings
The town lies in a region of considerable historical and religious importance. Kushinagar, traditionally identified as the place where Gautama Buddha attained parinirvana, is located in the same district and is a major Buddhist pilgrimage centre. Padrauna itself is associated in local tradition with figures from the Mahabharata period, though such associations are legendary rather than historical.
