Background

Osmania University, the parent institution, was established in 1918 during the reign of Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, and was the first university in India to use an Indian language—Urdu—as the medium of instruction. The university later transitioned to English as the principal medium and developed a network of constituent and affiliated colleges across the former Hyderabad State and, after reorganisation, the present-day state of Telangana.

The College for Women was established within this network to expand access to higher education for women in Hyderabad, building on the broader objective of widening participation in tertiary education that has guided the Osmania system. It functions under the academic regulations, syllabi and examination framework of Osmania University.

Academics

The college conducts courses leading to bachelor's and master's degrees in disciplines typically offered within Osmania University's faculties of arts, science, commerce and social sciences. Admissions, examinations and the conferral of degrees are administered by Osmania University, while teaching, internal assessment and student affairs are managed at the college level.

Significance

As a women-only constituent college of a major state public university, the institution contributes to women's participation in higher education in Telangana. It is part of a long-standing cluster of Osmania-affiliated colleges in Hyderabad that have historically served students from across the city and adjoining districts.
