Background
The founding of Osmania University in 1918 marked a significant moment in Indian higher education. At a time when most universities in British India followed the colonial model and taught exclusively in English, Osmania introduced instruction in Urdu while making English a compulsory second language. A dedicated translation bureau, the Dar-ul-Tarjuma, was set up in Hyderabad to render scientific, technical, and humanities texts into Urdu so that the curriculum could be delivered in the regional language.
The university was conceived as a comprehensive institution covering arts, sciences, and professional studies, and it played a central role in shaping modern educational, administrative, and intellectual life in the erstwhile Hyderabad State.
Campus
The main campus of Osmania University is situated in the eastern part of Hyderabad and is spread across a large tract of land that includes academic buildings, residential hostels, sports facilities, and open green areas. The Arts College building, designed in an Indo-Saracenic style with influences drawn from Mughal, Hindu, and European architectural traditions, is among the most recognisable structures on the campus and is widely regarded as a heritage landmark of the city.
Academics
The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes across faculties that include arts, science, commerce, engineering, technology, law, education, management, social sciences, and oriental languages. It functions both as a teaching university through its constituent campus colleges and as an affiliating university for a large number of colleges located across the districts that historically came under its jurisdiction.

It has produced generations of administrators, scientists, writers, jurists, and political leaders, and has been an important centre of student politics, particularly in the movements associated with regional identity in the Telangana area. The Arts College building and the broader campus are regarded as part of the architectural and cultural heritage of Hyderabad.
